Video animation training

You want to make a video with a group but you are unsure due to lack of technical knowledge, appropriate animation methods and reference points …

Conceived along the lines of a large scale video workshop, the training we offer will be based around creating video letters which are particularly apt for addressing the basic issues surrounding video animation.

Participants will be helped to create their own short film in small groups, learn to handle equipment, write a statement of intent, shoot footage, view and analyse film rushes, and consider the challenges at each stage of filmmaking.

Training objectives:

• to clarify your personal project and experience filmmaking
• to design, create and set up a video workshop
• to assess the challenges at each stage of the workshop process
• to start listening to your audiences and learn to use their resources
• to act in the social and cultural sphere to bring out the viewpoints of ordinary citizens

Training methodology:

use of technical methods; creation of short films; working in groups and sub-groups; feedback from experience; meeting with animators-filmmakers through their workshop contribution.

Time required:

Although this matter is negotiated on a case by case basis, the training can be envisaged over 4 days:

Day 1:

• defining the work scope and expressing participants’ expectations
• learning about equipment: camera, camera mount, microphone, boom and how to use them
• location scouting
• screenwriting and discussion on short films

Day 2:

• shooting footage and sound pick-up – part one
• group derushing and analysis of images and sounds collected (cutting room)
• shooting footage and sound pick-up – part two
• derushing and edit plan

Day 3:

• learning about animation in video workshop: critical analysis of workshop film clips
• editing short films with a film editor

Day 4:

• meeting with animators-filmmakers with workshop experience
• finding out about their films, approach, methods; discussion about the challenges
• showing the short films created in training in the presence of the animators-filmmakers and discussion
• group evaluation of the training
